Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

Many times I’m that person picking a book because the cover is designed beautifully. Many times it works well and the book turns out wonderfully. This time I picked out Own Your Life: Living with Deep Intention, Bold Faith, and Generous Love to review c/o Tyndale House Publishers and I’m wishing the pretty cover didn’t lure me in. Very rarely do I read a book and dislike it, but I’m 189 pages in and I can’t bring myself to even finish the book.

What’s Own Your Life About?

The back cover says: “God has made you with the capacity to live courageously, to have great faith, and to become a person of influence.”

I agree with that statement whole heartedly. God wants me to make an impact for His Kingdom. He has a purpose and a plan for my life that He has specifically designed for me. It’s an amazing realization, one that challenges me to grow every day.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. -Jeremiah 29:11

Full of Scripture, Own Your Life is full of lots of truth but had several areas where I didn’t like it at all.

it’s so fluffy I’m going to die!

This book was full of unneeded, sometimes misleading, fluff. My husband will be the first to remind me that there is power in beautiful literature-but there is only power when it points back to the story-not the word count. Lots of beautiful phrases, slightly awkward reminiscences, cluttered the bits of truth.

who is really in control?

Part 3– Owning Your Life by Giving God Control: What Only He Can Do

Giving God control in my life has always been a struggle. Ask my husband…I’m type A to a T. The heading of this part gave me hope that Clarkson would finally leave the “girl power…you can do this!” talk and begin to elaborate on how owning one’s life can only be done by giving it up entirely to God.

final thoughts

This book is filled with scripture, but still it seems to be missing the point. This book is missing the fact that you can’t entirely own your life. You have to give up the control to God. You have to let the Holy Spirit work in you.

Are there good quotes in the book? By all means yes, for example this one: “Jesus is not just a thought to be understood, a verse to be memorized, but a living, breathing, vibrant, loving, personal God who lives and breathes among us.” Some may love this book, but it just wasn’t for me and I always want to give honest reviews and be transparent with my readers.

Because the cover is beautifully designed the book gets one out of five ruby-red slippers.

It’s always so sad when a book is disappointing! I often get drawn in by pretty covers, too, but I’m glad to know I should avoid this pretty cover.

I got the book as well. I actually read half of it and lost the book. My husband and I have looked everywhere and can NOT find it. I found it very tough to read the part I did read. It had some great concepts like big pictures but I didn’t feel like any follow through to that thought. I struggle with control and giving it up to God to control.
