Outfit Details: Moneta Dress Pattern
I Sewed a Dress! – Colette Patterns Moneta Dress
While I was at Iowa State I took an apparel production course where we learned how to sew on industrial and home sewing machines, sergers, etc. It was one of the most practical classes I took in college because I’ll actually be able to use the skills all my life. Fun fact about the class: for our final we had to sew a skirt from start to finish in an hour and a half, talk about pressure… don’t worry, I finished.
However, it has been nearly ten years since I’ve used those apparel production skills (minus sewing on buttons) and I wanted to put them to use again.
So, a few days before I turned 29, I made a list of goals (in no particular order) that I wanted to complete before I turn 30 (I have until April of 2018). Goal number 25: Learn to sew a dress.
This was a goal where I would definitely need to re-learn a few things before I’d be able to accomplish it.
Earlier this summer, I went to Modern Domestic and signed up for a dress making class and bought the fabric for the dress (after sewing this dress I canceled my spot in the class and conquered the next few dresses by myself, more to come on the blog soon). After being so inspired I then started searching for other dress patterns when I came across my friend Chelsea modeling a dress I really liked!
I messaged Chelsea asking her if she’d help me make the Colette Patterns Moneta Dress, she graciously agreed! We planned a date to sew, I bought another pattern for this dress and a few more yards of fabric. After four hours of sewing and one hour of cutting all of the fabric out, I had a finished goal number 25! And for the first time had a garment that I was proud to wear in public! (We mostly used scrap fabric on our projects in college, I don’t exactly ever want to wear the butterfly camp shirt I made… funny enough it is still in my closet in Iowa!)
So, don’t be afraid to go after your goals and brush up on old skill sets. And be proud of yourself when you accomplish them! I know I’m still glowing because I made a pretty darn awesome dress.
Now I want to sew a whole bunch more… so I’ll go forth and conquer!
