I Let My Husband Pick My Outfits for a Week
When I was working at Oregon State I let my husband pick my outfits for a week, it was a disaster, and I definitely didn’t blog about it. He’d pick something out and I’d tell him there was no way I was going to work dressed like that. By the third or fourth try he’d finally come up with an outfit and I’d leave for work discouraged thinking he’d wanted to pick me out something I didn’t like or look good in. Clothing that I had once “thought” looked good or bought for a good deal and hardly wore.
If you’re going to let your husband pick your outfits out for a week. Make sure you thoroughly clean your closet and sell/donate all the things you no longer wear. I began collating years of clothes I found for a good deal and hardly wore in November. If I didn’t wear it or love it anymore, why keep it in the closet? While you might see a lot of different outfits on the blog. My clothing selection is actually a lot smaller these days. If I can’t re-wear an item multiple ways it probably ended up in my Poshmark closet.
Now, nearly two years later I decided to let my hubby try again at picking my outfits for a week. This time we’re writing about it and documenting it to share our experience with you. I’d like to say that after three years of marriage he knows my style better and succeeded with flying colors. Maybe I should just let him pick my outfits every day? Want to see what he picked for a week, the rationale behind it, and my thoughts on what he picked, keep reading, we wrote you a novel.
When it’s 100ºF in Portland one is going to want some flowy clothing. Since we couldn’t go with a dress or skirt ’cause Allison’s teaching Sunday School today and it’s just not practical I went with a flowy top and jeans. This top, from Loft, is not only super cute but incredibly practical. A simple cami underneath helps with a shirt like this and I know for me an undershirt when it’s hot is comfortable. These Paige jeans are one of Allison’s favorite’s (not to mention she found them on a super sale for $30) and I knew that the dark wash would pair well with the top I chose. They also offer enough stretch to allow for the up/downs she’ll be doing in Sunday School. For shoes, these sandals from Sam Edelman felt like a great way to comfortably tie in with the bold top without sacrificing the comfort needs for teaching Sunday School.
All-in-all I wanted Allison to feel sexy even with the practical needs of the day and I’m thinking the bold and cozy combo should do just that.
I gave him one guideline for today’s outfit – please don’t pick a skirt or a dress because I need to be able to sit on the floor without flashing the four and five-year-olds during kids ministry at church. Mission accomplished!
It’s day one of this experiment and I’m impressed that my hubby picked me out an outfit that I’m excited to wear! Maybe I should give him more credit…. I had a feeling he’d pick something that I didn’t want to wear because that’s how this experiment went the last time we tried this several years ago. It typically took three tries for me to be happy with the outfit the last time we tried this. Today, he successfully picked one of my favorites on his first try. It does help that I cleaned out my closet this spring and only own pieces I like these days.

97ºF is what I was thinking about when I picked this out. It had nothing to do with how epic Allison’s barre3 arms look in this sleeveless dress or how those these Anne Klein heels do something to her confidence. I’ll be honest: I like the way her butt looks when she wears them (she works out too hard to not show off what she’s worked for). When choosing the heels I went gold instead of black so that it wouldn’t blend in with the dress. I find if your shoes and your main garment(s) match too well then both can get lost. Contrasting the shoe for something that will pop brings both the shoes and the clothes out.
Allison asked if I’d also choose her undergarments for this “pick out my outfit for a week” experiment. No pressure or anything. For this dress, I went with a Victoria Secret push up for some additional support and to help fill in the dress (Allison’s Comments: I would have worn this bra with this dress anyway, it makes the dress fit better). It’s not a size thing (really), but if a dress isn’t fully filled out in the bust it can help to have some push up to fill it in. Since it’s a lighter dress the only consideration I took for underwear was seamless. Tada, the blushing husband will now move on the to the next paragraph.
For accessories, I went with a white and gold bangle to go on the opposite wrist as her Apple Watch to tie her shoes and her white watch into the outfit. To top off the outfit I chose some gold with pearly-white earrings from Stella & Dot, to tie the outfit together top to bottom. For hair, I suggested her hair up as it’s a great low-maintenance way to make curly hair be controlled without frizz; and how easy is just putting one’s hair up? All-in-all, Allie’s looking fierce in her power-outfit to rock the Monday morning “oh wait…the real world is real” feeling.
When Peter had this outfit laying on the bed for me to wear today I was elated that he’d picked something I love, two days in a row. I guess three years of marriage really has the hubby knowing what I like to wear.
When I wear this dress I feel like I can conquer anything. This dress has special memories. Every time I wear it I’m reminded of the day I interviewed for graduate school. Mom and I had gone to Kohl’s about an hour and a half before I needed to be on campus for interviews. We picked out this dress and a few things to go with it just in time to change and be on campus. Those shopping trips with her have always been special to me. While it might be seven years old it is still in as good of condition as the day mom blessed me with it. I’m sure glad my hubby likes this dress as much as I do!

When Allison tried this dress on I thought it was a killer dress. Being it was Tuesday, it felt like it was a day that needed a killer dress. This dress is so simple and elegant and is easily one of my favorites in her closet. Throwing it with the polka dot heels was a no-brainer since I know how much Allison loves her polka dots. For accessories, I went with simple pearl studs and a vintage black bangle that paired well with a black Apple Watch band instead of her regular white one. (The watch band swap was her idea and it was a good one!)
For the undergarments: see day 2.
A black dress is an essential in every woman’s closet. I shared with my hubby that I’d be leading my first student success workshop of the semester today and he picked me out a power dress. I’m excited to share wisdom with students on how to succeed this semester and this outfit gives me a bit of a boost in confidence too. I love that he picked one of my dresses with pockets. Every dress is better with pockets, right? For the ensemble to flow I did suggest that we trade Apple Watch bands for the day. I love how his black Apple Watch band blends in with the outfit.

When I’m in charge of the wardrobe I’m prone to grab the few things that Allison has relegated to the back of the closet and has forgotten to get rid of. I don’t keep track of what Allison wears enough to know that she’s never worn this outside of the dressing room. I thought the top would be perfect with these pants and using my clever husband-ninja skills she gave in. *brushes something off shoulders* I was right. The word “structured” comes to mind when discussing the fit of this top. Tops like this quickly make any outfit look more put together. These Banana Republic pants are a great “go with anything” look and since Allison was teaching today and doing a lot of walking I went with sandals.
For accessories, I wanted to tie to shoes in with the outfit so a gold and white bangle on the wrist and gold hoops complete this ensemble.
When I saw today’s outfit I was a bit annoyed. The top is a bit shorter than I prefer and I’ve been meaning to add this shirt to my Poshmark closet. Peter proceeded to pick three other outfits and I decided I’d try the first one he picked after all. I hadn’t worn this top in over a year. After putting it back on again I think it should remain in my closet. It’s a fun top and I think that’s why I hadn’t gotten around to posting it on Poshmark. I’m still rocking Peter’s Apple Watch band today as we haven’t switched them out yet.
Day 5 Outfit Details: Ring | Target Dress | Sandals | Earrings | Watch
“Peter, pick out my outfit!” was my alarm clock this morning. Whoops. I apparently didn’t hear her get up like I typically do. Feeling a bit rushed I glanced at the weather and grabbed the first thing that looked like it’d work from the closet. Luckily she’s paired her closet down to have only things she likes (sans yesterday’s top?). Knowing this dress would help brighten my wife’s mood I went for it. Accessories were simple: the earrings we’ve seen before in this post and a Stella and Dot ring all in gold because it’s Allison’s accent color of choice.
To address the items that make me blush: due to the neckline of the dress a strapless bra was in order so that the straps don’t show through. For this, the selection was her VS convertible bra. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
On a day that I woke up on the wrong side of the bed I was glad that Peter had picked this dress. Every time I wear this dress I get compliments on how great I look in it, so I knew the day was going to go better than my morning had begun. Peter had originally picked gray booties to go with this dress. I’m leading another workshop on time management and pleaded to be able to wear brown sandals instead since I’d be standing for an hour. Brown sandals were the better option, A. because summer is almost over and B. the gray booties are not practical to lead a workshop in.
These Paige jeans are some of my favorites on Allison. I’ll just say it: her tush makes these jeans look great. I paired it with this v-neck as I think it’s a great casual but feminine look that also looks really put together. There are only a few more days when just a tee will be bearable before the weather changes so I figured she’d really enjoy this.
Pairing with the heels was a valiant idea but ultimately it’s about making Allison feel great so I’m not going to push anything on her and these booties are awesome and frankly probably better than the heels. Tying the outfit together with some gold accents with a bangle and some pearl studs set her up for an awesome Friday, I think.
…and the blushing part: making sure the bra isn’t visible under a thin fabric like this shirt was the main consideration here.
Friday happens to be one of my favorite days of the week simply because I can wear jeans to work. I gave Peter full reign over my closet this morning and told him that he could pick anything, not expecting that he’d pick jeans. This is an outfit that I feel *badass* in and one I wear often without him picking it out for me. I love pairing a v-neck with booties and I’m glad that my husband decided on this pick for the day. I will admit that I vetoed the original shoe option for this outfit, black heels. So technically, I’ve been breaking a few of the rules of “letting my husband pick my outfits…” I can’t believe how fast this week has

I will admit that I vetoed the original shoe option for this outfit, patent black heels. So technically, I’ve been breaking a few of the rules of “letting my husband pick my outfits…” I can’t believe how fast this week has gone, and I really want him to pick my outfits more often. Talk about way less to think about in the morning.

Saturdays are for chillin’ and that’s what this outfit does. It was also going to be another 100-degree day here in Portland so Allison hinted heavily at shorts. These Nike shorts fit her really well and pair really nicely with her Kit and Ace shirt. It was a super simple pick and worked really well with our day shopping at the Nike Company Store and hanging out on the couch in the AC.
It’s the weekend and the temperature is supposed to get to 100 degrees. Due to warm temperatures, I requested an outfit that had black Nike shorts. I was excited that Peter had picked one of my favorite cute, yet cozy tees and the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. This outfit is perfect for conquering the weekend in comfort.
